National Day of Turkey
October 28th 2013
His Excellency, Former Vice-President of the Republic Mr. Luis Giampietri
Honorable Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Mr. Edgar Vásquez
His Excellency General Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alberto Salas Barahona;
Once again, I have the pleasure to welcome and thank you all for joining us on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey.
Throughout the thousands of years of Turkish history, Republican era constitutes a relatively short period but its achievements are impressive which created today’s modern Turkey, a democratic, secular and social state governed by the rule of law, respecting human rights.
After nearly four years of my experience in Lima, I have learned that national day speeches must be long enough to attract attention but short enough to cover essentials, so I will do my best to this end and share with you some important highlights in our bilateral relations and a personal note.
Since last year there have been several achievements in our bilateral relations which deserve mention. First and foremost the entry into force of the agreement on abolition of visas which allowed both Peruvian and Turkish citizens from all walks of life to travel freely between both countries to build new bridges.
Another important step was the signing of Civil Aviation Agreement to pave the way for both countries airlines companies to initiate flights. In this respect, I would like to extend my special thanks to Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr. Carlos Paredes Rodriguez who paid a visit to Turkey last May to finalize this agreement.
Last but not least is the initiation of Free Trade Agreement talks between Peru and Turkey which I hope will be ready in a short time thanks to Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Mrs. Magali Silva.
After highlighting the issues concerning our bilateral relationship, I would like to share with you a desire that is to receive the support of Peru to the candidacy of Izmir to Expo 2020.
For that reason, we have placed posters of Expo 2020 at our reception to remind you that Izmir hopes to have the support of our sister country of Peru.
As promised, I will not bore you with all the details of the developments in our bilateral relations and finish my speech with a personal note.
As many of you might have already heard, I have come to the end of my tour of duty in Peru and I have been appointed to another Turkish Republic: Uzbekistan.
Since this will be the last occasion to be with you all, I would like to share with you my impressions and thoughts about my experience in Peru since we established our Embassy in 2010.
Until I arrived in Peru, I thought that hospitality was only a characteristic of Turkish people which we are well known all over the world. I was wrong because ever since the first day our arrival to Peru, I and my wife Necla and all the members of the Turkish Embassy were received with a very warm welcome, were immediately accepted as friends and were treated like the members of the family which brought me to the conclusion that both Peruvians and Turks have something in common. Allow me to extend each and all of you my heartfelt thanks for being so generous in opening your hearts and embracing us. It is this warm welcome and approach which made our life much easier, our experience unique and unforgettable while establishing the Turkish Embassy in Lima. In this respect, I would like to express my special gratitude to my colleagues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their help and understanding.
Finally, I would like to assure you that I will continue to do my best to contribute to the enhancement of our relations and will always cherish the good memories and friends that I have from Peru.
Hoping to see you all in Turkey so you can personally experience the same hospitality that I have enjoyed in this beautiful country, I thank Peru and you
Long live the friendship between Peru and Turkey!
